When a UTI Might Be More Serious Than You Think

Most UTIs are simple to treat—but sometimes, they’re a sign of something more serious. Here’s when to get checked ASAP:

1. Symptoms aren’t going away Still feeling pain or urgency after treatment? It could be a resistant or recurrent infection.

2. Fever or chills This may mean the infection has spread to your kidneys.

3. Back or side pain Pain in these areas could also signal a kidney infection.

4. Nausea or vomiting If you can’t keep fluids or meds down, you may need IV treatment.

5. You’re pregnant or have other conditions Pregnancy, diabetes, or immune issues make UTIs riskier.

6. Confusion (especially in older adults) Sudden confusion can be a red flag—get help fast.
